PITTSBURGH'S LIBERTY TUNNEL COMPLEX GETS A NEW INSIDE LOOK

The rehabilitation of the Library tunnels will involve the construction of drainage channels at construction joints and other areas of the arched roof (where seepage is a serious problem), new roadbeds in each 2-lane tube, renovating the walls and installing new lighting, ventilation and drainage systems. Channels (250) will divert the flow of ground waters with the main drainage system and copper drains will be installed in the 22 deg. arched concrete ceilings and walls from the apex of the roof to the base of the walls. A special diamond cutting tunnel saw together with steps and platform for operator and equipment were designed for the latter operation. After cuts are made at 25-foot intervals, a specially designed rig (a Carry-Deck crane equipped with a hydraulically driven cutter mounted on the boom point) takes over for the break-in operations. The approximate time for the actual cutting and removal of concrete on the first tunnel was 3 months.
