SHIPHANDLING SIMULATION AND MARINE TRAINING

For several years the U.K. Department of Trade and Industry have been actively considering the problems of simulation for training mariners. As one contribution to this work, the group at Southampton University was asked to report on the visual problems associated with shiphandling simulation which required the close interaction of the mariners themselves. There are undeniable arguments for the potential of good simulation in training generally. The practical dilemma that faces both designer and customer is what "good" means in any particular situation. This article deals specifically with that question and analyzes what roles a shipbuilding simulator should perform.
