SHIP SPEED MEASUREMENTS AND NAVIGATION
During bad weather, many ships' positions are estimated from the course and the distance run according to the ship's log. Systematic errors in these distances leads to inaccurate navigation. The possible causes of these errors, and a method of correcting for them, are described along with the results of the analysis of data collected from the log books of three fast cargo ships.
