A REVIEW OF THE RAMSEY-ROUTLEDGE METHOD FOR GAP ACCEPTANCE TIMES
The Ramsey-Routledge method is easy to use but is reported to have a number of shortcomings. A simulation by the author to test the method showed a bias in the results equal to approximately half the cell size. The author, after briefly describing the method, derives the equations for the density of critical gaps for both the discrete and continuous cases and shows how under some circumstances the derived density can be negative. In particular, at small cell sizes, which are necessary to reduce the bias, the density of critical gaps can be negative. The method is compared with other standard methods of determining gap acceptance times and it is suggested that the other methods, although less simple to use, are statistically preferable. /TRRL/
