THE TOKYO PORT TUNNEL
The Tokyo port tunnel, one of the longest submerged road tunnels in the world, has been under construction since may 1970, by the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation. The scheduled opening date is March 1976. The form of construction was selected on the basis of geological condition of soft alluvial silt stratum at the construction site. The submerged tunnel is 1,035M long and the portal buildings and the cast-in-place tunnels together 290M. The underwater tunnel consists of 9 prefabricated reinforced concrete segments, each 115M long, 37.4M wide, 8.8M high, weighing about 42,000 tons and will be sunk in a depth of about 20M under the sea-level. The tunnel elements were cast in a dry-dock constructed some 4km away from the site. Beside the dry-dock, a concrete plant was built to supply 1000M3 fresh concrete in a day. The elements of the submerged tunnel were sunk by a placing barge. The speed of sinking was 0.2 - 0.3 m/min. For filling the space between the sunken element and the trench, a newly developed mortar grouting method was adopted. See also IRRD abstract no. 216173 /TRRL/
