PAVING THE WAY FOR BIKING AND HIKING
The importance of bicycling as a viable mode of transportation is noted. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) calls for the creation ofa bicycle-pedestrian coordinator in each state, in an effort to provide technical assistance in developing bicycle as well as pedestrian components of the nation's transportation system. AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) guidelines in the area are discussed, particularly in the of area safe facilities, and design criteria for such facilities. Efforts in Georgia to promote bicycle riding are described.
