VEHICLE NOISE AND TIRE NOISE
This report represents the results of research on the generation of road traffic noise. Firstly, the field experiments concerning composition and contribution rate of vehicular noise (origin of the noise) is described; secondly, the experimental results concerning tire pattern and tire noise in relation to travelling noise, found by the Japan Automobile Research Institute, Inc. (JARI), is introduced; and thirdly, the results of experiment on road surface roughness and vehicle noise, conducted by the Public Works Research Institute is reported. The conclusions are summarized as follows: 1. Concerning the outdoor noise of automobiles, diesel engine noise from large vehicles is the most severe. 2. In the case of high-speed travel at more than 80 km/h, the influence of tire noise on the outdoor noise of an automobile is great. 3. Concerning tire noise of trucks and buses, the widely prevalent rug-type pattern has the highest tire noise level among various patterns. On the contrary, the radial structure has the lowest tire noise level. 4. Concerning road surface roughness and vehicle noise, noise level increases as the roughness either increases or decreases beyond the roughness index value, R = 0.25.
