VEHICLE ELECTRONICS
The article examines the design and development of electronic vehicle ignition systems and their role in improving fuel consumption and reducing air pollution through greater efficiency. Although existing contact breaker-based systems are comparatively cheap to replace, they are inefficient due to mechanical limitations. Present electronic ignition systems such as the piranha, which are likely to be incorporated in high-volume production vehicles, will probably retain the existing distributor unit but replace the contact breaker assembly with magnetic sensors or opto-electronic devices. Another development is the introduction by Petrol Injection Ltd. Of an electro-pneumatic emission control fuel injection system. This equipment features electronic switching to control air/fuel ratio resulting in fuel savings of 10-20% when compared with carburettor systems. /TRRL/
