HIGHWAY TRAFFIC NOISE PREDICTION METHODS
Eleven papers are published which were presented at the Workshop which consisted of 4 sessions. The first session reviews the history of the development of prediction models and a current program to provide valid comparisons of the three major prediction procedures; the second session considered a new procedure recommended through NCHRP (National Cooperative Highway Research Program) Project 3-7/3; in the third session, field experience with prediction procedures were described by 3 major users; and the fourth session described recent approaches to the problem. All sessions attempted to identify and priorize major problem areas and deficiencies, explore and outline future projects to resolve these problems, and founding a universally acceptable noise prediction procedure. All participants agreed that there is no clear advantage between the use of L10 or L sub eq for highway design; a prediction procedure for urban street traffic noise levels is feasible and should be developed? noise engineering prediction procedures need to be coordinated better with other engineering disciplines involved in highway design; and noise barrier effectiveness prediction procedures are good except for wide berms. Summaries of each session are presented together with the papers presented at the workshop.
