PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN JAPAN: CONTRASTS AND CONCLUSIONS
Emphasis on the rail mode in Japan is examined. The Japanese National Railways is a dominant factor in both the intercity and commuter passenger services. Japan has subways in seven urban areas, several or which are also served by privately owned suburban railways. The author discusses ticketing, service and control, and travel habits of the Japanese. Convenience, comfort, safety and dependability of trains are seen as a reason for the popularity of public transport in Japan.
