TUNNELLING IN CLASSIFIED ROCK MASSES

While there will never be a substitute for experience in hard rock tunnelling, there is no doubt that an approach using one of the various classification schemes, together with a numerical modeling technique, can assist the engineer in many practical problems. This paper evaluates the use of Discrete Element Analysis (DEA), including 'block theory' and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and suggests the most appropriate rock structures for their respective use.
