SHIPBUILDING AFLOAT
Outlines an innovative construction method in building a 129 meter, 2800dwt Ro-Ro vessel powered by twin 2800bhp diesels. Designed by Trans-Consultants and built by Navire in Finland the vessel was assembled afloat and required no yard facilities other than a crane. The bottom of the hull consists of two cylindrical pontoons 97 meters long and four meters in diameter. Double bottom sections were welded to the top of the pontoons while the engines were being installed. Only cylindrical or flat plates were used to build up the hull. The superstructure with all accomodations is a self supporting structure consisting of container-like cabins built and fitted at a sub-contractors factory. The modules are lifted aboard individually and welded to the hull. Electric and water connections are grouped at the end of each module for ease of connection to the ship's system. No difficulties were experienced in building or operating this full scale prototype.
