LATEST MOVEMENT OF THE VICS (VEHICLE INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION SYSTEM)
In Japan, several systems have been developed by different authorities to target the reduction of traffic congestion and accidents through the use of ATIS (Advanced Traveler Information System). The Public Research Institute of the Ministry of Construction developed RACS (Road/Automobile Communication System), and has been working with 25 private companies since 1986. AMTICS (Advanced Mobile Traffic Information and Communication System) was set up by the Japan Traffic Management Technology Association with private companies under the supervision of the National Police Agency in 1987. Three public sectors and major private companies wanted RACS and AMTICS to work together to promote VICS, and the VICS Promotion Council was established in October 1991.
