FOREIGN-OWNED MANUFACTURING IN THE NONMETROPOLITAN SOUTH: WHAT CAN COMMUNITIES EXCPECT?
This report addresses the potential for and impacts of foreign direct investments (FDI) in the nonmetropolitan South. Findings indicate foreign-owned firms differ little from domestic branch plants in terms of labor force characteristics, local market linkages, locational determinants, value of governmental programs or economic impact. Industrial development programs in place to assist domestic firms appear sufficient to aid FDI. No new government programs appear warranted, yet more attention to labor quality is advisable.
