ISLINGTON RED ROUTE SURVEY

On two consecutive days in October 1991, the Centre for Alternative Industrial and Technological Systems (CAITS) carried out a survey of businesses along the pilot Red Route in Islington. Staff at 76 retail and service businesses along the scheme which runs through Islington from Highgate to Old Street in London, were interviewed, and a control survey was also carried out. This report gives a summary of the main findings, a discussion of some of the issues raised and the full findings. The majority of traders (61 or 80%) interviewed along the Red Route indicated that the scheme had adversely affected their business. Fourteen traders (19%) indicated it had had no effect, however, these businesses had their own rear or side loading and unloading facilities, and did not rely much upon passing trade. Loading and unloading difficulties were experienced by 40 (53%) of traders. The absence of parking bays and enforcement of the scheme on Saturdays, particularly in Upper Street, Islington, were highlighted as problems, as was a general lack of consultation with traders before the implementation of the scheme.
