MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This manual was prepared for the police traffic accident investigator. It is designed to provide a ready reference source of information and to assist the investigator in understanding the complexity involved in a motorcycle accident. The manual covers the various types of motorcycles and their operation, the examination of the motorcycle, accident scene data, operator information, helmet and related safety equipment, and state laws relating to the operation and use of the motorcycle. The information provided will help the investigator understand the motorcycle's unique operational characteristics and capabilities and help the investigator develop sound techniques for investigating motorcycle accidents. The manual is organized in the following sections: (1) Introduction; (2) Types and Operation of Motorcycles; (3) Examination of the Motorcycle; (4) Accident Scene Data; (5) Operators Information; (6) Helmets and Other Equipment; and (7) Motorcycle Dynamics. The appendices are: (A) Hurt Motorcycle Study; (B) State Motorcycle Laws; (C) Motorcycle and Helmet Manufacturer Information; (D) Motorcycle Specifications; and (E) Glossary. An Index is provided.
