The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation. Headed by an Administrator appointed by the President, FTA administers a program of financial assistance for the providers of urban and rural public mass transportation. The Federal Transit Act, as amended, is the statutory authority for FTA's programs. This brochure provides a history of the development of public transportation in the United States and introduces the FTA and its major programs.
