COMPARISON OF UK DOCKLANDS LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM WITH U.S. SYSTEMS
This report compares the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) System in London, England with selected similar systems in the United States. The U.S. light rail transit (LST) systems selected as representative comparisons were Portland, Sacramento, and San Diego. These systems are of similar size and were developed, built, and opened for operations in time frames somewhat comparable to that of the Docklands, primarily in terms of opening dates. The interest in a comparison originated as a result of favorable publicity received by the Docklands system due to its low cost per mile, rapid implementation, and immediate success in attracting riders. FTA's interest is in identifying any specific methods or lessons learned at Docklands that could be beneficially applied to U.S. systems.
