1991 TRAFFIC FATALITY FACTS

This report contains 1991 statistics for traffic fatalities in the United States. Highlights from the report are as follows: In 1991, 41,462 people lost their lives in motor vehicle traffic crashes, a decrease of 7% from 1990 and 19% from 1966. The number of fatalities per 100 million miles of travel in 1991 was 1.9, 65% lower than the rate for 1966. Fatalities per population were 37% lower in 1991 than in 1966, fatalities per licensed driver 51% lower, and fatalities per registered vehicle 60% lower. Figures and tables are presented showing: traffic fatality rates, 1966-1991; 1991 motor vehicle traffic fatalities by age group; average number of traffic fatalities per hour by time of day, 1991; motor vehicle traffic fatalities, 1975-1991 (occupant fatalities by vehicle type and nonoccupant fatalities); driver involvement rates in fatal crashes by age and sex, 1991; pedestrian fatalities and fatality rates by age and sex, 1991; pedalcyclist fatalities and fatality rates by age and sex, 1991; U.S. traffic fatalities and fatality rates, 1966-1991; and State traffic fatalities and fatality rates, 1991.
