PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

A literature review is presented on pedestrian crossings. The introduction of pedestrian crossings as a legal protection for the pedestrian has not led to a drop in the number of accidents involving pedestrians. Pedestrians considered that crossing on a pedestrian crossing is safer than crossing without a pedestrian crossing, and that crossing on a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights is the safest of all. The total effect of pedestrian crossings on the safety of pedestrians is minute. Measurement of all variables in the behaviour of the pedestrian in traffic is however insufficent, because correct methods have not yet been developed. There are no uniform criteria for the layout of pedestrian crossings. Most criteria are based on theoretical considerations of the possibility to cross, considering the intensities of pedestrian traffic and other traffic. /TRRL/
