UNDERGROUND PUMPED STORAGE: A TAUM SAUK OPERATION BELOW THE SURFACE
Characteristic features of Underground Pumped Storage (UGPS) are detailed, and single and double level UGPS developments are digramatically illustrated. Based on the fact that underground space can be utilized for the lower reservoir, the UGPS has attractice attributes: it allow the use of the highest head, and the longest capacity pump- turbines. The ratio of length-to-head for hydraulic conduit approaches unity. The scheme is independent of topographic requirements, requires only a small surface reservoir at grade, and presents a minimal environmental impact. In combination, these factors allow great flexibility in siting an UGPS project, and thus generate further economies with regard to transmission. The direct capital cost of a 2,000-Mn, 19-hour generation UGPS plant was about $190/kw. This does not include any return on excavated rock. In the current climate of concern over energy, environment and economics, utilization of the subsurface for UGPS facilities cannot be ignored.
