GEOSPACE: THE CONCEPT AND DEFINITION OF SUBTERRANEAN ACCOMMODATION
The need is indicated for an effective terminology for geotectural constructions which are determined by geological forces as distinct from architecture; the general historic context of structural achievement is reviewed, thee initiation of a professional geotechnical institute is discussed, attention is drawn to the need for classification and definition of types of geospace, and comments are made on inventorying and quality assessment of urban geospace, their popular acceptance and psychological influence, geospace medical research, and geospacial legalities. It is urged that a professional entity be established which will assess and coordinate the economic and spacial demands, and re-assess the effectiveness of professional design, constructional standards, and legal safeguards. A systematic terminology is required to assure clarity of meaning and ease of description, and the activities must be identified, classified and formalized. An inventory and quality assessment of geospace is now required for every city, to determine the total volume of all surface structures and to compute the proportion of subterranean and totally enclosed accommodation. Medical research should include review of British wartime underground records and of subterranean conditions which possess healthful microclimatic properties. It is observed that just as the energy crisis enforces review of subterranean potentialities, the environic crisis imposes aesthetic obligations on how it uses the limited inherited surfaces.
