THE ALKALI-SILICA REACTION IN CONCRETE

The alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is an unusual and unpredictable phenomenon which occurs worldwide. The factors involved are exceedingly complex, very interdependent and highly interactive. Environmental conditions and microclimates can have as much of an influence as the basic ingredients of the reaction, and the timescale over which ASR occurs is extremely broad. This book considers the advances that have been made in our understanding of this problem throughout the world. The book is intended as a source of reference for civil and structural engineers, designers, academic and industrial researchers, and advanced students. It is organized in eleven chapters, as follows: Introduction to alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete, A.B. Poole; Chemistry of the alkali-aggregate reaction, F.P. Glasser; Testing for alkali-silica reaction, R.N. Swamy; Role and effectiveness of mineral admixtures in relation to alkali-silica reaction, R.N. Swamy; Alkali-silica reaction--UK experience, I. Sims; Alkali-silica reaction--Danish experience, S. Chatterjee, Z. Fordos and N. Thaulow; Alkali-silica reaction--Icelandic experience, H. Olafsson; Alkali-silica reaction--Canadian experience, P.E. Grattan-Bellew; Alkali-aggregate reaction--New Zealand experience, D.A. St. John; Alkali-silica reaction--Japanese experience, S. Nishibayashi, K. Okada, M. Kawamura, K. Kobayashi, T. Kojima, T. Miyagawa, K. Nakano and K. Ono; and Alkaki-aggregate reaction--Indian experience, A.K. Mullick. An Index is provided.
