KANSAS CITY: A MODEL OF UNDERGROUND DEVELOPMENT
The combination of industry in the valleys of the Kansas City Area and mined out space in adjacent bluffs, provided the setting for the development and use of underground space. Kansas City has about 140,000,000 square feet of mined space in its 13 sites, and serves as a model in the two-tier use of urban space. Some of the building projects in the underground area include a vibration-free optical equipment plant and an empire of warehousing. The city is a model in conservation of energy through use of the natural insulating quality of the limestone rock. Figures are used to illustrate that the Kansas City development of underground space is geologically separated from the surface, creating two tries of use. Vertical separations of 120 Ft. allow for diversified operations. This type of development differs significantly from base ment type space. The Kansas City type developments must draw heavily on underground mining skills and the expertise of geologists. The latter type is described as lithospace development to distinguish if from the terraspace or basement type development.
