HIGHWAYS: AN ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH
Highway architecture is a way of attempting to achieve the best of both worlds by shepherding a highway project from planning through design, construction, and operation. It is an approach to rebuilding highway infrastructure from a humanistic rather than strictly an engineering point of view. Continuity is the prime objective. A corollary goal is to make the highway an integral part of its setting. This book addresses the subject of highway architecture in five parts: planning, preliminary design, final design, construction, and operation. Chapters are as follows: (1-1) Overview; (1-2) Alternatives; (1-3) Multiple Use and Joint Development; (2-4) Mapping; (2-5) Construction Materials and Foundations; (2-6) Water; (2-7) Pavements; (2-8) Environment; (2-9) Geometry; (3-10) Earthwork; (3-11) Drainage and Erosion Control; (3-12) Structures; (3-13) Intersections and Interchanges; (3-14) Roadside; (3-15) Right-of-Way; (3-16) Plans, Specifications, and Estimates; (4-17) Contracts and Risk Management; (4-18) Construction Items; (4-19) Safety; (4-20) Inspection; (5-21) Traffic; (5-22) Maintenance; and (5-23) Intelligent Vehicle/Highway Systems (IVHS).
