ASPHALT SURFACE TREATMENTS
This article is concerned with the treatment of asphalt road surfaces in order to restore their high skid resistance and good texture. The author points out that these properties are frequently lost long before the end of the structural life of the surfacing. Reference is made to an earlier paper which pointed out that the chippings applied to asphalt surfacings are frequently of inadequate quality, and the splash and spray problems associated with this type of surfacing are discussed. Surface dressings are examined and it is mentioned that they also give a splash and spray problem, presenting adhesion problems and having a tendency to loose chippings and/or fat up under conditions of stress. 12 requirements of a road surface are tabulated and an account is given of the development and use of friction courses. A series of 12 tables summarize the way in which four types of surfacing (hot rolled asphalt, fine cold asphalt, surface dressing and friction course) meet the 12 requirements. It is concluded that the friction scores on most, if not all, these points, particularly on high-speed roads. An appendix sets out a specification for a friction course material. /TRRL/
