FLEXIBLE PAVINGS - PRESENT AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
This article gives a review of flexible paving materials, outlines recent developments and discusses future trends. The author first gives an outline of the design features of flexible pavements, pointing out that they allow flexability in design as well as in a physical sense. He briefly compares them with concrete pavements and discusses the general requirements of a road surfacing material. The next part of the article is concerned with the three types of flexible material in current use:- hot rolled asphalt, coated macadams and mastic asphalt. Details are given of recent developments, particular reference being made to the introduction of the design procedure based on the Marshall test, which allows better utilization of resources of constituent materials, and the maintenance of resistance to skidding. Mention is made of the present knowledge in the latter area particularly in relation to the choice of aggregate and the weathering of binders. The problems arising from the increasing weight of traffic, the use of calcined bauxite in epoxy-resin binders at accident black-spots and the use of pervious surfacings to provide adequate drainage, combined with reduced noise generated by traffic are discussed. Likely future developments are discussed and reference made to the greater use of crushed rock fines, improved binders with a high penetration index, the "rational method" of mix design, and extention of the "veneer" concept of providing resistance to skidding. /TRRL/
