THE OPTIMUM UTILIZATION OF LIGHT AND ENERGY IN PUBLIC LIGHTING
The authors quantify the amount of electricity energy used, which amounts to 0.875 percent of total energy used, and costs about $21 million a year. A brief comparison is made of trends in increase of efficacy of different lamp types and an outline of typical values for efficacy and colour properties of general purpose lamps. Ways of saving are discussed in relation to different areas of use. After examining possible savings in public buildings, the authors deal with road and footway lighting, where they note that there has been a saving of 25 percent by the use of improved low pressure sodium lamp circuitry; it is pointed out that further savings can be made in group "b" lighting by replacing existing lamps by sodium lamps. Town and city centres are the next subject, where the use of high pressure sodium lamps would give savings when compared with mbf mercury lamps. After discussing floodlighting they consider savings that can be obtained by improvements in control gear and the geometry of installations. The influence of minimum DLOR requirements, particularly in relation to increased spacing and improved lanterns is discussed. Possible improvements through increased flexibility in switching and the luminance of road surfacings are mentioned in the conclusion. /TRRL/
