PREVENTING AUTOMOBILE INJURY: NEW FINDINGS FROM EVALUATION RESEARCH. CHAPTER 4 - CHOOSING AUTOMATIC RESTRAINT DESIGNS FOR THE 1990S (WITH COMMENTS)
This chapter describes simulation models designed to quantify the lifesaving and economic consequences of alternative restraint design choices for model year 1990 cars. The analysis provides information relevant to the following questions: Are automatic restraints desirable in a mixed environment of voluntary and mandatory belt use and, if so, which design if preferable? What research should be conducted in the next several years to assist decision makers in both DOT and the auto industry as they consider automatic-restraint policy for the 1990s? The chapter begins with the selection of two value frameworks, proceeds with a description of two corresponding simulation models, continues with a presentation of modeling results and key sources of uncertainty, and concludes with a discussion of research and regulatory implications.
