PROTECTION OF SCHOOL CHILDREN . COMPENDIUM OF PAPERS. SECOND AFRICAN ROAD SAFETY CONGRESS, ADDIS ABABA, OCTOBER 16-20, 1989. JOINT ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR AFRICA AND OECD CONGRESS
This paper outlines the road safety training provided for pupils at nursery, primary and secondary schools. At the suggestion of the Togolese Road Safety Organisation (the Prevention Routiere Togolaise, or PRT), road safety education has been made compulsory in both primary and secondary schools. The PRT has produced a booklet for teachers entitled "Cod' Ecolier", and has deposited 5000 of these books at the disposal of the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research. The Ministry used this book to produce a text book on road safety entitled "Prevention Routiere". The first part of this book is for 7-9 year olds, and teaches the difference between roads and streets, night and day behaviour, how to cross the road, correct behaviour on footpaths and the observance of traffic lights and police signals. The second part is for 9-17 year olds. This examines two-wheeled vehicles, driving, recognition of signs, roads, the type of behaviour to adapt in traffic, vehicle priority and general traffic regulations. Written examinations are held in this topic for this age group. A campaign entitled "Crossing the road" was also initiated by the PRT to stimulate children's interest in the topic. It was carried out at 12 schools whose gates let on to highly trafficked roads. A pedestrian crossing was marked out in front of each school and two pupils at each school were trained to act as patrollers to guide other pupils across the road using this crossing. (TRRL)
