POLYMERS IN CONCRETE: A PROTECTIVE MEASURE . PROTECTION OF CONCRETE. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1990

The use of polymers in concrete as a protective measure against various means and forms of deterioration is investigated and discussed in this paper. Attention is given to the design of new concrete as well as the use of polymers in the rehabilitation of existing concrete. Looking at impregnation with a monomer and subsequent polymerisation, mixing of monomers or polymers into standard Portland cement mixes and the use of a polymer as the only binder in a concrete mix, it is clear that a wide range of solutions is available against concrete deterioration problems when considering polymers in concrete. Attention is given to the mechanism of protection when using a polymer in the concrete matrics, as well as the disadvantages in using this material. To illustrate the use of polymers in the rehabilitation of existing corroded concrete, some case studies are presented which represent typical concrete corrosion problems in South Africa.
