WIDE AREA VEHICLE MONITORING (WAVM) SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT IN ONTARIO AND THE EMERGING WORLDWIDE COMPETITION . PROCEEDINGS OF THE 1989 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ROADS AND TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATION OF CANADA, CALGARY, ALBERTA, SEPTEMBER 17-21, 1989
The Wide Area Vehicle Monitoring (WAVM) system in an application of satellite communications and navigation technologies. The system will provide real-time truck location and identification information and two-way message communication services between equipped trucks and trucking company base stations. Since the project's initiation, the WAVM system is being enthusiastically received by the trucking industry. An interim WAVM system called the Interim Mobile Data System (IMDS) is currently being developed and should be implemented in 1990. This paper describes WAVM development and application in Ontario, and reviews the emerging worldwide competition in the WAVM technology and market. (Author/TRRL )
