COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF PERMEABILITY OF BRIDGE DECK PROTECTIVE OVERLAY SYSTEMS BY THE MODIFIED API RP-40 AIR PERMEABILITY TEST METHO . PROCEEDINGS OF THE 1989 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ROADS AND TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATION OF CANADA, CALGARY, ALBERTA, SEPTEMBER 17-21, 1989
The waterproofing ability of any protective overlay system is a major factor in the success and expected life of any repaired or protected concrete bridge deck. Permeability testing has generally been expensive and often inconclusive for evaluating protective systems. The modified API RP-40 test method, which is often used to measure the permeability of rock strata for the oil industry, is an economical and reasonably accurate test for comparing the permeability of in-place concretes, overlays and membranes. This paper describes the test method, as well as the results of permeability testing on 36 bridge decks in the province of Alberta. An analysis of the data allows different systems to be compared on the basis of waterproofing performance, and provides insight into the optimum membrane thickness and design parameters for various materials.
