SAFETY FITNESS AUDITS: HOW YOU'RE RATED

The general safety fitness procedures found in Part 385, Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations are designed to determine a carrier's knowledge of and compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, and, where applicable, the Hazardous Materials Regulations. Any business operating trucks over 10,000 lbs gvw in interstate commerce is subject to the rating process. There are 3 ratings: satisfactory, conditional, and unsatisfactory. Safety ratings are based on the results of an on-site review of a carrier's operations by a Federal Highway Administration inspector. The safety review process is described, including the questionnaire with 75 questions, each assigned a different weight. A complex algorithm is then used to determine the final rating.
