SHRP'S CUTTING EDGE. DEVICES TO TRANSFORM WORK ZONES
The Strategic Highway Research Program's (SHRP) efforts to help make maintenance work zones safer is described. Of all the new devices that have resulted from research, the Infrared Intrusion Alarm has been rated the best. The alarm works by sounding a loud siren whenever a vehicle strays into a work zone, giving maintenance workers 4 to 7 seconds warning to clear the work area. Details of the device are described. The details are also described of the new flashing stop/slow paddle developed by SHRP which has two high-intensity, quartz halogen lamps that drivers can see from as far as 1,000 ft away. Another device is the portable speed bump, a new lightweight device, which causes a jolt and an audible rumble, alerting approaching drivers.
