PERMEABILITY AND FILTRATION: PERFORMANCE VS. INDEX TESTING
The area of permeability and filtration testing, and the type of performance that it involves, namely the plugging or clogging potential over the life of the geosynthetic is discussed. It is necessary to find a medium between the soil that is allowed to pass through the fabric, and that which is retained, while maintaining satisfactory permeability, i.e., adequate permeability needs to be provided while maintaining adequate soil retention capabilities. In order to characterize this type of performance, testing needs to be performed with the geosynthetic not only characterizing the opening distribution of the geotextile, but also using soil from the specifc site where the geosynthetic is to be installed. The appropriate tests, and who peforms them, is discussed. The need for continued education of those involved in such testing is emphasized.
