A METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE SPACING AND WIDTH OF CRACKS IN PARTIALLY PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS
The paper presents the results of an investigation undertaken to study the behaviour of flexural cracking of partially prestressed concrete beams of I section. A method is proposed for determining the average spacing of cracks that form at different stages of loading in a reinforced concrete flexural member. Using the crack spacing so obtained, an upper bound to the maximum crack width is computed. The proposed method is used to determine the crack spacings and maximum crack widths that occur at the levels of prestressed steel, non-tensioned steel or soffit, or at any other level on the side of a partially prestressed concrete beam at different stages of loading. These computed values are compared with the results of nine prestressed concrete I beams tested in the investigation. (A) /TRRL/
