SATURATION FLOW AND CAPACITY OF SHARED PERMISSIVE LEFT-TURN LANE
This paper describes a model that provides a logical treatment of the problem of the left-turn adjustment factor, and is applicable for a shared lane only. In this study, the capacity of a shared left-turn lane is considered as a function of opposing flow rate, number of opposing lanes, proportion of left turns in the shared lane, proportion of left turns in the opposing lanes, flow rate in the lane adjacent to the shared lane, proportion of opposing vehicles arriving in red interval, cycle length, green interval, and signal change interval. Logical relationships between the capacity of a shared left-turn lane and its influencing factors are identified on the basis of field observations, theoretical considerations, and computer simulation. The details of the study and results are described.
