TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT FOR WATERFRONT TOURIST CENTERS. TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING IN A NEW ERA. ISSUE PAPERS FOR THE ITE 1992 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA
Monterey, California, which has experienced a substantial growth in traffic volumes in the waterfront area, is now revising its General Plan Transportation Element, with waterfront circulation and parking planning as a major focus. This paper reviews the traffic and parking impacts of the Aquarium and other waterfront attractions with an analysis of proposed short-range and long-range improvements. The links between traffic, parking, transit, and pedestrian/bicycle facilities are described. The paper compares Monterey experiences with those of other cities such as Baltimore and San Francisco in managing traffic and parking impacts in similar areas.
