OBJECT-ORIENTED APPROACHES FOR INTEGRATED ENGINEERING DESIGN SYSTEMS
An overview is provided of the role of models in the development of integrated engineering design systems and the central ideas behind product and process models are outlined. The paper also describes the role of the object-oriented approach in implementing models and as a unifying concept between product and process models. This inlcudes two forms of each type of model: generalization models and instance models. The paper, which focuses on structural engineering design, describes examples from this area of civil engineering.
