THE ACCESSIBLE CITY
LA CITTA ACCESSIBILE
This article emphasises the lack of personal mobility in towns with specific reference to the old, the disabled and the very young. Some Italian legislation from 1968-89 is briefly reviewed and judged to have been ineffectual due to lack of enforcement. Some designs are illustrated for wheelchair ramps at kerbs, pedestrian crossings, and for car access. Poor parking policy and the slow construction of metropolitan road networks are blamed for the progressive paralysis of urban mobility.
