INNER SPACE

Extensive widening of the M40 motorway from two lane to three in Buckinghamshire is being undertaken within the existing boundary of the motorway. Widening is required to accomodate the increased traffic expected on the completion of the motorway extension to Birmingham. The existing hard shoulder is being used as the third lane and a new hard shoulder is being constructed alongside it. Some cut and fill for cuttings and embankments is necessary; demolition and reconstruction of seven overbridges, one underbridge and a footbridge will be required. Retaining walls or gabion baskets are being used to contain new cuttings and embankments. Ground radar used during preliminary site investigations indicated that remedial work was required on a large proportion of the hard shoulder because of reflective cracking. A 245mm upper base will be placed over the whole width of the road after the old surface has been removed. Varied ground composition throughout the site has meant that great care has to be taken not to mix different types of soil when building new embankments. Temporary bridges have been constructed to accomodate demolition work which is carried out at night. Site safety is a major concern with 33 closed circuit TV cameras being used to monitor the complete site. (TRRL) (Author/TRRL)
