DIGITAL IMAGING CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS IN PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT. DISCUSSION
This is a discussion of a paper of the above title by S.G. Ritchie published in Vol 116, No 3, May 1990 issue of this Journal. The discussers note a system for implementing an image processing method for pavement distress analysis. It is pointed out that the histogram-based gray-level thresholding methods described by the author are not adequate for the identification of pavement distress in asphalt concrete pavements. Several texture-based image-segmentation methods have been developed at Case Western Reserve University to overcome the shortcomings of a global gray-level image segmentation technique. The discussion is followed by a closure by the author.
