FLORIDA'S BRIDGE INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT PROGRAM ON THE FEDERAL AND SECONDARY SYSTEM
The salient features are highlighted of Florida's program where all of the bridges are given an in-depth inspection every 2 years, and a visual inspection at least every year. There is a minimum of 3 full-time inspection teams and 3 two-man diving teams. A Bridge Inspection Training Program (which consists of 100 classroom hours) is outlined, and the inspection report is briefly described. The most frequently occuring problems and some unusual problems encountered in Florida are reviewed. Salt intrusion into reinforced concrete, deterioration of joint fillers, the freezing of steel bearing plates and shoes, vehicle impact damage to prestress beams due to overheight vehicles, and bats nesting on cable saddles are some of there problems.
