HIGHWAY NOISE
The strategies to solve the problem of traffic noise are reviewed, and some of the technical problems involved are discussed. The most acceptable strategy is a systems approach comprised of 3 parts: quieten the vehicle; zone the affected area to noise insensitive users; and incorporate noise reduction features in highway design. The ability to measure and predict noise levels in meaningful terms is important. A modified sound level meter that reads time occupancy in discrete band levels is now available. The opinion is expressed that traffic noise attenuation measures should only apply to access controlled highways, and that reference to occurrence time should be abondoned.
