THE MASS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM IN CALCUTTA - A CLEAN, EFFICIENT AND WELL MAINTAINED METRO
For a conurbation of 12 million people, metro represents the ideal solution for handling the daily journeys made by its non motorized population. In building a form of heavy transport, Calcutta offers the rare example of a large city in a developing country which is succeeding in keeping pace with rapid urban demographic growth. Opened in stages from 1984, the Calcutta metro uses tried and tested techniques supported by the latest technological aids, with a triple daily leitmotif of safety, efficiency and cleanliness.
