ONLINE RETRIEVAL OF ONGOING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS IN THE HIGHWAY FIELD
A demonstration project sponsored by the Transportation Research Board now allows transportation personnel across the country to access of HRIS (Highway Research Information Service) information stored at a central computer site. In addition to providing more rapid response, the online retrieval allows the remote terminal user to define his needs more precisely and thereby obtain more useful information. The Transportation Research Board has developed the Transportation Research Information Service (TRIS) with a data base which includes HRIS summaries and abstracts, as well as certain DOT files and Railroad Research Information Service abstracts. The TRIS file is stored through contractual arrangement with Battelle Columbus Laboratories. A software system called BASIS allows access and retrieval of the desired portions of the file. The file now contains a Transportation Research Activities Information component. This demonstration project allows access only to abstracts stored since 1970, and research in progress studies newly acquired or updated since 1971.
