RESIDUAL DEFORMATION ANALYSIS FOR INELASTIC BRIDGE RATING
In this study a new method for inelastically rating steel girder highway bridges, RDA (residual deformation analysis), is presented. The method assesses the residual moments and deformations that are set up in a bridge beam that has been loaded into its inelastic resistance range. RDA combines classical elastic conjugatge beam theory with empirically formulated moment-versus-rotation relationships for both midspan inelastic positive moment and interior support inelastic negative moment hinging. RDA was used to rate an example bridge against an inelastic deflection limit to achieve a 17% load capacity increase above that given by the elastic strength limit. This was sufficient to prevent posting of the structure.
