FEASIBILITY OF CABLE STAYED BRIDGES FOR CROSSINGS OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER
The results are summarized of a feasibility study which indicated that it would be entirely feasible to construct either a cantilever, cable-stayed or suspension bridge of 2100 ft. span, and that the cable stayed bridge would be most suitable for long span crossings of the Lower Mississippi River. The cable stayed bridge consists of a main truss or girder system at deck level, directly supported at the tower piers and anchor piers, and supported at intermediate points by a system of straight cables at the tops of the towers. The fundamental advantage of this type of bridge as developed in this study is that it combines the desirable feature of the cantilever type in applying essentially only vertical loads to the foundations, with the long-span capability of the conventional suspension bridge. It is also of superior aesthetic appeal. Estimates of construction costs are outlined; the construction costs of the cantilever and stayed bridges are practically equal through out the span range studied of 1200 ft. through 2100 ft.
