MASTIC ASPHALT CONCRETE "GUSSASPHALT"
A project is described which evaluated the mixing and placing characteristics of a Mastic Asphalt Concrete, evaluated the immediate and longrange performance of the paving system, and determined the cost-performance relationship of this system as compared to the conventional, high-type, bituminous concrete pavement. The paving train used for placement moves on rails and consists of 3 components: the propane heated screed, the chip spreader, and the crimper roll. The Mastic Asphalt Concrete consisted of a Trinidad and conventional asphalt cement blend, gravel fine aggregate, gravel coarse aggregate, and a limestone filler. Plant modifications are outlined, and plant/field procedures are detailed. The project which was 9,046 feet long and was placed at an average of 245 feet for a surface area of 24,625 square yards, cost $3.20 per square yard. The pros and cons of Mastic Asphalt Concrete utilization are listed.
